Varadero opens its doors to international tourism. All you need to know

Varadero reopened to international tourism on October 15 after several months closed to foreign travelers due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In the initial reopening stage, clients will be able to stay in 4 and 5 star hotels, and take excursions and other activities within an approved zone. Likewise, all services will be paid by customers with credit cards to avoid manipulation of cash. The non-hotel activities included in this phase will be linked to the Chapelin and Gaviota marinas, gastronomic, commercial and recreation services, as well as the dolphinarium, among others.

-Varadero International Airport
The Varadero international airport, considered the second largest in the country, is ready to resume all its operations after having established biosafety protocols to receive visitors.

-Tourism as a vital source of income
For this year our small island had expected the arrival of 4.5 million international visitors. Tourism is for Cuba the second economic area after the sale of professional services abroad, it contributes around 10% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employs approximately half a million people in the state sector. Also, a high percentage of the more than 600,000 workers in the private sector carry out activities related to tourism.

-Current epidemiological situation after the second wave of Covid-19 cases
Cuba faced a second wave of COVID-19 since the end of July, when the outbreaks began that forced to cancel the opening in Havana and delay it in neighboring provinces. Currently, most of the Cuban provinces are in the third and last stage of the de-escalation, and seven of them, together with the Isle of Youth, have not reported cases of coronavirus for more than 15 days. The situation in the Cuban capital does not look bad, in fact, an airport opening is expected for next November 10. At the moment the most committed provinces are Ciego de Ávila, Sancti Spíritus and Pinar del Río.
